Happy New Year!

In the UK we have just started a new year. We usually stay up until midnight to ‘see the new year in’ and shout ‘Happy New Year!’ We make new year resolutions . These are hopes and promises to do something better this year. A good example is saying that you will try and exercise every day this year. It is a joke in the UK that we always fail our resolutions by the end of the first month, January! Here’s hoping we can try and get it right this year and learn a bit of English every week.

Synonyms for ‘give’. Remember that the word ‘present’ as a verb has the emphasis on the second ‘e’: ‘He was presented with an award for bravery’. The noun has the emphasis on the first ‘e’: ‘What a lovely present!’
